Chrissann Nickel

CURRENT ROCK OF RESIDENCE: Virgin Gorda, BVI
ISLAND GIRL SINCE: 2006
ORIGINALLY HAILS FROM: California

Chrissann’s home rock in the British Virgin Islands, against all logic, feels bigger to her than it actually is. Though after spending five years on a teensy one acre island, the current 13-mile long rock she’s residing on now IS ginormous, at least by comparison. As with everything in the Caribbean, it’s all about perspective.

Once upon a time she used to care about things like matching her purse to her pumps, but these days, she’s a card-carrying member of the Barefoot Nation. She is utterly enchanted with vinyasa yoga, especially when practiced on somewhat precarious, deliciously Instagram-able surfaces such as paddleboards, boats, cliffs, or even the occasional willing friend’s body. She vehemently believes that toucans are the best animals ever (period.) and there is no convincing her otherwise (though imperious roadside goats come in as a close second).

As the Editor in Chief of this site, she spends a lot of her time working from home all by her lonesome writing, editing, and cultivating content designed to make her fellow islanders laugh. Besides her writerly pursuits, she moonlights as a yoga instructor, and attributes at least a smidge of her insanity to the amount of time she spends talking to drunk people. If you’re somehow still reading this and feel inclined to find out more about this “Chrissann” of which we speak, you can also take a gander at her eponymous personal website.

Things I Used to Miss But Am Content Without

As many rock dwellers know, there are quite a few things/pastimes/everyday conveniences that we generally have at our fingertips when living on a 'mainland' country (US, UK, Europe, the world over) that we simply do not have here on our wee little islands, and I don't...

The Lack of Electricity…

As like every Island, Curacao has its positives and its negatives. Most of my time I will brag about my perfect island life and rub my gorgeous and colorful pictures under your nose. Beautiful beaches, endless happy hours and unique beach weddings. All within easy...

5 Signs You Have Settled on Your Rock

Deciding to move to a rock is challenging, just as moving to any other country is. On a rock, however, there are different challenges you face that only people on a rock will understand. For one: they tend to be surrounded by water. This could limit your possibilities...

Invasion of the Cockroaches

'Invasion of the Cockroaches', the title sounds like a cheap horror movie, but believe me, this was no movie. This was very, very real! I love animals, I really do, but four legs is my limit, that's where I draw the line. I don't like anything with six or eight legs...

Don’t Worry ’bout a thing….

I've always been an anxious person - even when I was a kid. As a farmer's daughter, I worried about the weather. I obsessively checked the Weather Channel to determine if there was too much rain, not enough rain, or heaven forbid…hail in the forecast that would...
