Landlocked her entire life, Amanda always dreamed of being a mermaid and is finally getting the chance! Well, as close to a mermaid as an air-breathing terrestrial mammal can get anyway. Though it took her eight years to get a B.S. in Organismal Biology from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she decided not to use it and to become a SCUBA instructor instead. What started as a two week vacation to the island of Roatan sparked a return trip for the PADI IDC course, which was then extended to the full 90 day visa stay. After being off the island just two weeks, Amanda returned there to live on the island she had come to fall in love with.

Besides being in the water, other activities she enjoys include ocean conservation, amateur photography/videography (even though losing/destroying cameras is a special skill of hers), scientific plant/animal identification, and making friends with local dogs and cats. Though she loves all animals, her favorites are sharks, squid, and octopus. She was once introduced to someone as, “This is my friend, Amanda. All she talks about is sharks.” Which is true and has not changed much, and has possibly gotten worse over the years.
