Founder and Editor-In-Chief

CHRISSANN NICKEL

Chrissann Nickel_Women Who Live on RocksChrissann’s home rock in the British Virgin Islands, against all logic, feels bigger to her than it actually is. Though after spending five years on a teensy one acre island, the current 13-mile long rock she’s residing on now IS ginormous, at least by comparison. As with everything in the Caribbean, it’s all about perspective.

Once upon a time she used to care about things like matching her purse to her pumps, but these days, she’s a card-carrying member of the Barefoot Nation. She is utterly enchanted with vinyasa yoga, especially when practiced on somewhat precarious, deliciously Instagram-able surfaces such as paddleboards, boats, cliffs, or even the occasional willing friend’s body. She vehemently believes that toucans are the best animals ever (period.) and there is no convincing her otherwise (though imperious roadside goats come in as a close second).

As the Editor in Chief of this site, she spends a lot of her time working from home all by her lonesome writing, editing, and cultivating content designed to make her fellow islanders laugh. Besides her writerly pursuits, she moonlights as a yoga instructor, and attributes at least a smidge of her insanity to the amount of time she spends talking to drunk people. If you’re somehow still reading this and feel inclined to find out more about this “Chrissann” of which we speak, you can also take a gander at her eponymous personal website.

ASHLEY LADLIE

Ashley Ladlie_Women Who LIve on RocksAshley lives on St. John in the US Virgin Islands where she can be found drenched in sweat while communing with the hermit crabs who live in her yard.

The (non)coincidence of living in a shac-teau on the most remote part of a tiny secondary island in the Caribbean while spending the majority of her time with a creature named after people who prefer solitude is not lost on her.

Despite constant inquiry as to how long she’ll be on St. John, Ashley has learned in her three decades on this planet that setting one’s life plans in stone is the best way to ensure their futility. For now she remains enchanted with the beautiful absurdity on her rock of residence, which is colorful in far more ways than one.

You can hire her to write and design for you at www.badashbabe.com.

  1. I love going home to chilly England and sitting in the bingo hall with my mum, showing pictures of our lovely St. Thomas Rock to all the old biddies. In their minds, they think I am living an episode of Robin Leach’s “Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous!” I let them believe that. Sometimes though, when I’m sitting with mum, I show her pictures of the tarantula in my kitchen, my pound puppy eating food with the 10 bush cats out on the porch, or kissing a huge iguana in the yard (yes, the iggies up in my yard are used to Oliver SirLicksaLot!), or share stories with her about fishing in my cistern for the coqui frogs that had claimed it as their own private swimming pool, mice running across my head in my sleep or some unnamed insect dropping on my face in the night. Needless to say, she doesn’t believe me, and asks, instead whether we get Eastenders on the telly. I tell her no mum, I get to lay under the stars, watch the moon rise, and listen to the symphony of insects that lullaby me to sleep everynight. Incomparable!

  3. Just reading thru your meet the women… I find it funny that you list Bimini separate from the Bahamas…. since it is a Bahamian island and has always been located in the Bahamas! Love this forum and hope to write for you when I finally retire… moved to my rock in the Bahamas (Eleuthera) 10 years ago and now work 3 jobs! No time to write, but enjoying the read!
